Hey guys.

UNF really needs donations. If you could contribute it would be greatly appreciated.

In addition to the Paypal option, you can now easily donate straight from your debit or credit card. Just go to http://www.nfoservers.com/donate.pl?force_recipient=1&recipient=gulfangler@bellsouth.net then enter the amount you wish to donate. You will also need to create a source, which will store your secure card information. The purpose of creating a source is so if you want to donate again, you don't have to re-imput all your card information; you could just use the stored source. This is a donation coffer/account provided by my server host, NFOservers.com, so it is safe and secure and I will get your donation. The donations page on the top right of this homepage is for our Paypal users, and there you will also find updated donation benefits.

Ciao,
Eternal Howl

P.S. I also updated the donat-o-meter dollar monthly goals to reflect the monthly costs of the server. If you were paying attention, the old month_goals ranged from $150-$200, back when the server actually cost that much per month, so after 3 years I finally got around to updating them. Hehe.

Hey guys.

It's been a long, long seven months since I last posted an update for UNF on this site. A lot of changes have been made in that time, both in my server and in my life.

As far as my life is concerned, I just completed my first year of college--the last (and better) half of it at LSU. It is amazing to ponder that I started UNF in 8th grade and it has lasted all through my first year of college. Thanks to all who have helped make the server what it is.

For the past year, and especially in the latter part, I have been devoting all my time to transitioning to what we call "college life." College took up such a swath of my time that I was not able to do so much as glance over UNF, and so I turned the server over to RedButton and gave him the title of Server Operator [SO].

For whatever reason, in the first few months of the new year, people stopped playing on the server and it fell into disrepair. Jengovote stopped working properly, and AdminMod was not working for a while. UNF plummeted all the way down to at least 47th in the server rankings (the rank might have gone down lower than that, but I wasn't around to see it ) Considering that in its prime UNF went up to as high as number 4 in the global TFC server rankings, considering that we have always consistently maintained a top 15 ranking, and considering that when we were 47th there were other NeoTF servers--including URBAN's--ranked ahead of ours, I began to think that it was time to hang up the cleats-- time to shut down the server for good. I still had some donation money, but what reason was there to keep it up if no one was playing? We had had a good run up to that point. I thought of moving to TF2 and using the donation funds for that.

But then summer came.

UNF has seen a revival that frankly I did not anticipate. I started performing routine maintenance on the server in June--just because I couldn't get away--and you guys started coming back. And again. And again. Just two months ago UNF was in the basement covered with cobwebs, ranked 47th, a shell of itself. However, you guys have in a span of two short months brought the rank back up to 14th and have put some adrenaline back into what once was a superior server. We might be moving further up--let's hope so! Perhaps me returning from a long absence had something to do with it too--but probably the summer season had more to do with it.

Your interest in UNF thus motivated me to make some changes to the server. Get ready, because there are many.

Before I start, let me start by stating the obvious--I am back! For now... RedButton is, for the time being, no longer Server Operator, but will remain Head Admin. Now, without further ado...

I got the ventrilo server back up and running again. It was down because when I upgraded my subscription package a while back I accidentally cancelled the vent server. No worries, it's back up now: atlanta-ventrilo.nuclearfallout.net. Port 8160.

I added a cool new mod, Tech Mod, to UNF. This is a mod that has been around for quite some time and has always been an easy install. I don't know why I didn't have this on UNF to begin with. Tech Mod adds varying specialties to classes depending on which ones are voted on by each team. Each team could have different techs, or each could have the same ones. All of those decoy flags you see, the HWs that run fast when they fire, for example--that's TechMod.

Unfortunately, Tech Mod has the ability to make Attack/Defend maps (e.g. dustbowl) unbalanced with the "Fast Scouts" Tech, because even if the Scouts get the flag, they maintain their high rate of speed. Because of this, I have had to eliminate scouts from all Attack/Defend maps to restore the balance to these maps. Tech Mod, despite this scout problem, seems to be doing well so far. I will continue to monitor its popularity in the coming months before I declare it a server staple.

I also put some of our modded versions of default maps back on the server. Whenever you change the map to 2fort, well, casbah, cz2, crossover2, or badlands, you will now see modded versions of those maps. Some will have extra weapons, and others will just have the team names changed. But I think these maps provide a nice kick of flavor to the server. Speaking of maps, I am in the process of adding new ones to the server--I already added a nice new adventure map called "jurassicpark" and another one called "arcticescape_r" is on the way, in addition to other kinds of maps.

Besides the new Tech Mod, I have also made a few changes intended get players on the server--call it a stimulus package, UNF style. Some changes are obvious, others not so much.

First, I decreased the map timelimit back down to 30 minutes per map. When RedButton was [SO] he increased it to 40 minutes, but I brought it back down.

I also eliminated armor stripping. Now, whenever you shoot your teammates, they may get annoyed, but nothing will really happen to them as far as health/armor loss is concerned. I really should have had armor stripping off the whole time. Oh well.

Additionally, I added a really cool /save plugin. Now on adventure maps and conc maps, you can save your position by saying "/s" in worldchat, and load it by typing "/l". When you die, you can instantly teleport to the same place you last died instead of having to run all the way back over there--assuming you saved, of course.

I also increased the slots from 16 to 24. We had enough money to do that, and since its the summer and we are getting more people I feel this is the only time we will be able to do that again. So meh.

The last and most brazen of my playerbase reforms--and some will undoubtedly disagree with this--was an idea I took from Jigglypuff. He did the same thing with his 2FORT Jigglyroom. On Independence Day, July 4th, I cleared the ban lists. Completely. Every last name and Steam ID is gone from them. I did this because I feel everyone deserves a second chance, and some of the names in there had been banned years ago. Others had been banned for superfluous reasons or no reason at all--and I also felt I needed to open the floodgates to everyone, so to speak. I have seen a few once banned players come back--Winkee, GzA, and Brian, to name a few. These players all know they are on a short leash though, and I also saved all my ban lists just in case I needed to close the gates again, so knowing this I can only hope these players would exercise their best behavior on the server.

On this website, I cleaned up the forums and gave all registered UNF admins admin forum access. Speaking of admins, I added a few more--mosly oldies who have been admin before--but we are still looking for more.

The admin test is free for anyone who wants to take it--it is posted on the server forum: http://www.unftfc.com/board/showthread.php?t=2720
That is the latest version of the test. Just because you pass it does not mean you automatically become admin, FYI.

As far as the future of UNF is concerned, my hope is limited. I suspect this uptick in players is due to the summer season and do not expect these numbers to sustain these same levels throughout the rest of the year. But who knows? Maybe you all will surprise me again like you did when you all started flocking back this summer. But I do know one thing: when I am back in college the time I devote to UNF will be scarce. Heck, i'm not even looking after it now as much as I have in the past, because I have a job working at Wendy's that takes up a lot of my time (Before you ask, all proceeds from my job at Wendy's goes toward college and college only). That brings me to my next topic: donations.

I have gotten a few committments from people who said they were going to donate. That's great, because if the donations stop coming in then UNF will definitely go down. I have said this many times before and it is no less true now than it was then. We have always been funded solely by donations and will always be funded solely by donations. The benefits--incentives of donating--remain the same. Go to the "Donations" page on the home page for more info on that.

As I make more changes to the server I will post them on the forums, so keep checking back for more news. If anything significant happens or changes, I will post it here on the home page.

Until then, les bon temps rouler.
Eternal Howl

P.S: R.I.P. Billy Mays. You will be remembered on our server with our all new "Glow Billy Mays," "trail kaboom," and "trail orangeglo," in your honor.

Hello.

Based on the forum poll and my own instinct, I have decided to have the players (noobs) DL every misc sound not necessary for gameplay (doh, woohoo, etc) from here on the website. I have enclosed them all in a zip file to be downloaded. Once you have downloaded the zip file, use WinZip or any other unzipping utility to extract ALL the sounds to the following:

C:/Program Files/Valve/Steam/SteamApps/(your steam account username)/team fortress classic/tfc/sound/misc

Once you have done all that, you noobs should be ready to play with all sounds working, and you will have saved some sitting and waiting on the server.

Like others suggested, however, I did leave some sounds and models in the .res files to be downloaded on the server. Examples are the multikill/ultrakill/killingspree etc sounds, the sleeping sounds (amx plugin), all the piss puddle models, and the graves (amx plugin). Other than that, that's all the custom stuff the noobs will need to DL from the server.

Have fun!

Love you all,
Howl

P.S: I'll be in Orlando for a week starting tomorrow.
